France vs Japan

France vs Japan Live : 2019 Soccer Game The history of relations between France vs Japan goes back to the early 17th century, when a Japanese samurai and ambassador on Japan is around the same size as France. France is approximately 551,500 sq km, while Japan is approximately 377,915 sq km. Meanwhile, the population of France is ~67.1 million people (59.3 million more people
Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the L.A. Times soccer newsletter. I’m Kevin Baxter, the Times’ soccer writer.

Today is Equal Pay Day, a symbolic event dedicated to raising awareness about the gender pay gap. And the women’s national team, which is taking its federation to court to raise awareness of that gap in U.S. soccer, moved a big step closer to equality in one measurement when a corporate sponsor promised to make up the difference between World Cup bonuses paid to men’s and women’s players.

LUNA Bar, a nutrition bar marketed to women, said Tuesday it will give each of the 23 players on the U.S. team this summer $31,250, which the women say is the difference between bonuses paid by the federation to players on the men’s and women’s World Cup rosters.

“Unfortunately U.S. Soccer hasn’t closed that gap,” said forward Megan Rapinoe, who hopes to play in her third World Cup this summer in France. “But the market is there. The appetite is there.”

“They believe in us,” she continued, pointing to corporate sponsors such as LUNA Bar and Adidas, who announced last month that the bonuses it will pay Adidas-sponsored players on the winning team in the Women’s World Cup will be equal to what it paid players on France’s world championship men’s team last year. “They believe in the bigger fight.”

The 28 players in the national team pool filed suit in federal court in Los Angeles last month saying U.S. Soccer slights the women in pay, bonuses and per diems as well as travel and other accommodations.

The federation has pushed back claiming – correctly – that U.S. Soccer has spent millions of dollars to subsidize the National Women’s Soccer League, pay the guaranteed club salaries for national team players and provide insurance and other benefits it doesn’t offer the men.

Now Congress is involved, with 34 senators — including Californians Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris — last week sending a letter to U.S. Soccer Federation president Carlos Cordeiro urging him to address the issue of pay disparity.

Cordeiro has already pledged to do that in his own letter, writing that he is “committed to working with our USWNT players and understanding specifically where they believe improvement is needed.”

Meanwhile other countries are making progress of their own. Last week Canada Soccer reached a two-year compensation agreement with its women’s team that general secretary Peter Montopoli says will subsidize the club salaries of select players and pay per diems equal to that given the men’s team. And last year, after the men’s players transferred some of their money to the women’s program, Norway’s federation agreed to equal pay for both national teams.

(It should be noted the teams aren’t really equal. The Norwegian men, who have won just one World Cup game since World War II, are ranked 48th in the world by FIFA while the women, who have won world and Olympic championships, are 12th.)

“As the game progresses internationally, everybody wins. That’s the cool thing,” said U.S. forward Alex Morgan. “There has been a lot of development in European soccer on the women’s side. And that’s fantastic for us. We take pride in pushing things forward.

“This country and this team have always been looked at as a leader in what we’re doing for women and girls. And it will continue to be that way.”

Is Canadian soccer putting hockey on ice?

Hockey and soccer are pretty similar when it comes to the objectives of the games but you wouldn’t know that from looking at the success Canada has had with the two sports. Many of the best hockey players in the world come from the Great White North while the country’s men’s soccer team has mostly been an afterthought — if that.

Canada has played in one World Cup, losing all three games and failing to score a goal in 1986. And it’s made it past the group stage in the CONCACAF Gold Cup just once in the last four tournaments.

But LAFC’s Mark-Anthony Kaye, who helped Canada qualify for this summer’s Gold Cup with a 4-1 win over French Guiana last month, said the country’s soccer fortunes are looking up.

“We’re going in the right direction,” said Kaye, a Toronto native who has seven caps with Canada. “There’s been a lot of turnover within the CFA. So it’s been hard to create a consistency from top to bottom. But I think now with John Herdman as our head coach and the staff he has underneath him, there’s a real sense of where we want to be as a country and as a team going forward.

“Even this Gold Cup, we’re going there to win it. I think in other years it’s been ‘OK, let’s get out of our group and see how it goes from there.’ But we have a real sense of urgency to do well.”

Herdman, a Brit, guided the Canadian women’s team to a gold medal in the Pan Am Games, bronze medals in the last two Olympics and to the quarterfinals of the 2015 Women’s World Cup, to which Canada played host. And since moving the men’s side he’s won all five games he’s managed, with his team outscoring opponents 19-2.

The young talent pool Herdman can draw on may be the deepest in Canada’s history, including teenage midfielder Alphonso Davies, who plays for Bayern Munich; 19-year-old forward Jonathan David of Belgium’s Gent, who has four goals in as many international games; and forward Lucas Cavallini, 26, who plays in Mexico with Puebla.

Yet Canada is ranked 79th in the world, five spots behind the Cape Verde Island and two places ahead of Curacao

“We haven’t really gotten the respect that we deserve yet. And that’s fair,” said Kaye, 24. “You need to beat top-tier opponents in order to get that.”

Canada will get that chance this fall in the Nations League, where it has been drawn into a three-team group with the U.S. and Cuba, meaning it will get a home-and-home series with the Americans, a team Canada has played just once since 2013.

“We always want to test ourselves against top opponents. The fact that we’re in the group with the U.S. is good. It’s right there,” Kaye said. “There’s no excuses anymore.”

If they succeed, Kaye said that will accelerate a trend that could have soccer challenging hockey for sporting supremacy in Canada.

“I think it already has,” said Kaye, who admits he was a poor skater as a kid despite the fact the skill was mandatory in winter gym class. “It depends on what you’re grading it on. If you’re grading it on world power, then obviously hockey is going to win. But I think when it comes to the amount of kids playing the sport, soccer has already passed hockey in that sense.

“It’s cheaper. It’s easy to set up. It’s easier on the parents. Hockey was more of a rich players sport when I was growing up. All my friends played hockey because they had money. I didn’t have money.”

Viva Mexico (and its Argentine coach)

The Tata Martino era in Mexico is off to a far more successful start than even the coach anticipated, with El Tri rolling to impressive exhibition wins over Chile and Paraguay last month in California.

And just think how good they’ll be when Martino calls up Carlos Vela, who scored three goals for LAFC in Saturday’s 5-0 rout of San Jose, giving him an MLS-best six in five games this season.

(Watch Vela’s first MLS hat trick here.)

More important than the wins, though, is the fact the Argentine coach and his staff got to use 27 of the 28 players on their roster — only third-choice goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez didn’t get into a game – and made noticeable progress implementing their complicated
Auxerre (France) (AFP) – In a heavyweight warm-up match for this summer’s Women’s World Cup, hosts France take on Japan, champions in 2011 and losing finalists four years ago, in Auxerre on Thursday.

After playing Japan, France face Denmark in Strasbourg on Monday. Coach Corinne Diacre said the opponents were chosen because “they have styles similar” to Norway and South Korea, two of the teams France will face in their group. Nigeria are the fourth team in the pool.

Japan are in a group with England, Scotland and Argentina.

France are ranked fourth in the world by FIFA. Japan are seventh.

Japan “are a big team, which is one of the best in women’s football,” said striker Eugenie Le Sommer.

“It will be a difficult match but it will allow us to take on the best to prepare ourselves for the World Cup.”

The Lyon star, who has scored 73 goals in 157 international appearances, missed France’s last match, a 1-0 loss to second-ranked Germany in March.

On her return, Le Sommer will face long-time Lyon team-mate Saki Kumagai, a defender who has won a century of caps.

Japan were surprise winners of the 2011 World Cup.

“It was a miracle,” that team’s captain Aya Miyama told the FIFA website on Monday.

Japan then took silver at the 2012 London Olympics and reached the World Cup final again in 2015 to confirm their place among the elite.

“World Cups are never easy,” Miyama said. “But this team has more confidence in themselves, and I think they have a really good chance to win.”

Nations must name a provisional squad of up to 50 players by April 26. That must be winnowed down to 23 at a later date that has not yet been fixed. France kick off the competition against South Korea on June 7 in Paris.

USA vs Australia Live : United States vs Australia 2019 Women’s International Friendly Soccer Game Tv. USA vs Australia Exhibition Water Polo Match. On Wednesday, August 22, at 5:30 p.m., Stevenson will host an exhibition water polo match in the Pirate Pool Australia is very large, in-fact it’s about the same size as continental USA. Before planning travel to Australia, it’s important to understand its size

We meet again, Australia. You lovable talented absolute jerks. The last time we beat you was 2015, and our two most recent meetings were a flat out 1-0 loss at OUR OWN tournament at the Tournament of Nations in 2017 and a 1-1 draw once again at OUR tournament during the 2018 Tournament of Nations. Could you not?

So now we’re playing each other ahead of the World Cup, where we’re both considered strong contenders to get to the final. We’ve got our eye on you. PARTICULARLY on that Sam Kerr character, even though you have a million and one other talented players too, you utterly overflowing with talent honey baked hams. God, it’s just disgusting. As if Kerr wasn’t enough you’ve got bloody Caitlin Foord and Em van Egmond, and American attackers are going to have to break down Alanna Kennedy, Steph Catley, and Ellie Carpenter? Carpenter who, by the way, is 18 but already has 30 caps for Australia? And on top of that all you have goalkeeper Lydia Williams, who is probably a top-5 international goalkeeper? Can you like, just calm down for a hot second?

Okay. We’re breathing. We’re centered. We’re calm. But seriously just get out of here, Australia.

Projected USA starting XI

We all know the number question on most fans’ minds is will Ali Krieger play??? Who knows! You have to think Jill Ellis called her in for a reason (that reason being our utterly anemic fullback player pool at the moment, and whose fault is that, coach). But we’ve also seen Ellis seems to be fine pushing center backs out wide and may want someone with more legs under her than the 34-year-old Krieger staring down some combo of Caitlin Foord, Sam Kerr, and Tameka Butt. Who knows! Let’s have some fun and assume she starts.

Also of note, Lindsey Horan is back after sitting out SheBelieves with a quad injury. She was sorely missed in the midfield, but if healthy, could bring back some of the cohesiveness the squad lacked.

heU.S. Women’s National Team takes on growing rival Australia on April 4 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (7pm MT on FS1). The match, which is likely to be a sell-out, will feature two countries that are widely considered to be among the favorites to win the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer. The USA is 2-1-2 so far in 2019, all against World Cup-bound teams.

STORYLINES

USA vs. Australia: The last three games between the USA and Australia have highly competitive affairs. They produced a 3-1 win for the USA in the opening game of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, a 1-0 loss for the USA at the 2017 Tournament of Nations and a 1-1 draw at the 2018 Tournament of Nations. In the most recent meeting between the teams, on July 29, 2018, the U.S. goal in the 1-1 tie came on a late equalizer by Lindsey Horan in a match that saw the USA out-shoot the Matildas 18-8. The tie kept the USA alive for the tournament title, which it won after defeating Brazil, 4-1, in its final match of the competition

The USA has a record of 25-1-3 against Australia dating back to 1987, and has outscored Australia 96-24, only allowing more than one goal against the Matildas on four occasions. Australia’s lone win came at the 2017 Tournament of Nations. Before the last two meetings at the ToN, the most recent meeting between the teams came at the 2015 Women’s World Cup in the opening game of the tournament for both teams. Megan Rapinoe scored early before Lisa De Vanna equalized in the 27th minute. Christen Press got the game-winner off an assist from Sydney Leroux in the 61st,before Rapinoe scored a dagger in the 78th to clinch the match.

Fifteen of the 16 players who played for the USA against Australia in last year’s ToN match are back, including 10 starters. Australia brings back 14 of 15 players who played, including all 11 starters. The U.S. has played Australia six times since 2012 and scored 16 goals. Five different players named to this roster have scored in those games: Morgan (3), Press (2), Rapinoe (2), Lloyd (1) and Horan (1). Lloyd has one other goal against Australia, a dramatic stoppage time game-winner in a driving rain storm in Cary, N.C. on April 27, 2008.

100 Goals Watch: After scoring against Japan on Feb. 27 in Chester, Pa., Alex Morgan – the 2018 U.S. Soccer Player of the Year, now has 99 goals and at age 29 sits in sole possession of seventh place on the USA’s all-time goal scoring list. She has scored 26 goals over her last 31 WNT matches through the end of 2017 and 2018 and into 2019. With her hat trick against Japan on July 26, 2018, the fourth of her career, Morgan is now tied with Michelle Akers in third place all-time in multi-goal games (26) behind Abby Wambach (45) and Mia Hamm (38). She has 22 career two-goal games. Morgan has scored against 28 different countries and in 11 different countries.

Countdown to the Cup: The 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cupwill be the eighth consecutive World Cup appearance for the USA, which has appeared in each of the previous seven tournaments that have been contested and won in 1991, 1999 and 2015. The USA is one of six countries to qualify for all eight Women’s World Cups along with Brazil, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden and Nigeria. The tournament will be held from June 7-July 7 in nine cities in France. The USA’s Draw and placement in Group F gave the USA venues that are all within a two-hour drive of each other, with the opening game taking place in Reims, followed by Paris and then Le Havre. The “Countdown to the Cup” will take the WNT to all four times zones in the continental United States, giving fans across the country a chance to cheer the team on to France.

Red Sox vs Athletics

Red Sox vs Athletics Live : The Boston Red Sox will turn to Nathan Eovaldi in hopes of stopping their four-game losing streak Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics.Boston has yet to score a run over the first two contests of the four-game series, falling to the A’s 7-0 and 1-0.Eovaldi is looking to bounce back from six-run, three-homer outing against the Seattle Mariners. Oakland will counter with Marco Estrada.

The good news is: It’s pretty safe to say there’s no way this will continue forever. Every team has a stretch of bad bullpen meltdowns during the course of every season. It’s highly unlikely guys like Strop, Cishek and the others are going to continue to struggle to this level when they have long track records of success. Mike Montgomery won’t have a 40.50 ERA forever.

But when there’s less than a week’s worth of action to judge a season on, the problem is certainly magnified.

Throw in the fact that this problem was the biggest concern all winter plus all the comments from players, coaches and front office members about the need for a hot start, and it’s the perfect equation to send Cubs fans into an angry frenzy.nly one team will win this year’s World Series, but many more will be happy with the season to come. Teams will surprise themselves, build toward something bigger or find joy in events that are not directly followed by a huge municipal parade.

But each team’s idea of success will be different. We now set out to define what a happy season could look like for each major league team. We use as our guide the wisdom of the long-dead British philosopher Jeremy Bentham, who wrote, “Nature has placed [baseball fans] under the governance of two sovereign masters: pain and pleasure.” The whole of human emotion, with all its nuances and gradations, can fit under these two umbrellas. So it is with 30 teams: Success can be defined by pleasures gained, as it can by pains avoided.

What follow are the success floors for all 30 teams. Each team gets two paths to happiness: One is on the pleasure scale, related to an accomplishment achieved. The other is on the pain scale, related to a sadness avoided. The Red Sox just had the perfect season, maybe the most enjoyable, drama-free, unblemished season this torture sport has ever allowed. Sure, it’d be fun to somehow top it, but a team that can’t be satisfied with 108 happy wins and a happy romp through the postseason is chaining itself to the hedonic treadmill. The Red Sox will almost certainly be worse this year. They will probably not even win the World Series. They will be OK with that. After eating 10 cupcakes, the 11th has very little marginal value, as far as the sugar rush goes.Things are off to a bad start for Boston this year, with one win in their first six games (entering Wednesday) as the starting pitching has not been good and the offense has gone MIA over the last couple games. There’s too much talent for things not to turn around, but some reinforcements will almost surely be needed.

The Red Sox current lineup is filled with home-grown talent, with Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Andrew Benintendi, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Rafael Devers fronting a core group that has won three straight AL East titles. Prospects that have come through the pipeline have been used to acquire Chris Sale, Craig Kimbrel, Nathan Eovaldi and reigning World Series MVP Steve Pearce.

Some of Boston’s top prospects this year could be used as trade fodder, and there’s a place for that. But a better mode would be to use major league-ready prospects as their own reinforcements, in cases of injury, underachievement or a simple need to upgrade.

As the Red Sox try to defend division, American League and World Series titles in 2019, these five prospects can help.Shawaryn was fifth-round pick in 2016 out of the University of Maryland. Between two levels last year he had a 3.44 ERA with an 8.0 K/9 and a 2.3 BB/9 over 26 appearances (25 starts, 149.1 innings). He followed that up with a good showing in the Arizona Fall League (2.13 ERA, 10.7 K.9 over 12.2 innings).

Shawaryn is Boston’s No. 9 prospect entering this season, according to MLB.com, and he’s closer to the big leagues than the pitchers ranked above him (Jay Groome, Bryan Mata, Tanner Houck). If the Red Sox look to Pawtucket for a pitcher, Shawaryn will be worthy of consideration. The White Sox will pick third overall in the 2019 MLB Draft this summer, but they’re a little lower on the list when it comes to how much they’ll be allowed to spend on draft picks. MLB released its signing bonus pool allotments for all 30 clubs on Wednesday, and the White Sox come in fifth at $11.565 million.

Bonus pools determine how much each MLB team can spend on signing draft picks before being penalized. Teams that exceed their pool limit by 0-5 percent pay a 75 percent tax on the overage. However, the penalties quickly get much steeper, including the potential loss of future picks. No team has ever outspent its pool allotment by more than five percent.

The Diamondbacks have the highest draft pool allotment at a bit over $16 million. The Orioles ($13.821 million), Royals ($13.108 million) and Marlins ($13.045 million) round out the top five with the Sox.

For the third overall pick, the Sox will be able to spend up to $7.22 million. Since the start of the bonus pool system in 2012, no player has signed for more than 2018 first overall pick Casey Mize, who received $7.5 million from the Tigers.

The Red Sox have the lowest bonus pool allotment at $4.788 million. The Cubs are 26th with a bonus pool allotment of $5.826 million.

Yankees vs Orioles Live : League-wide 2019 MLB Opening Day is Thursday and starts at Yankee Stadium at 1:05 p.m. ET the New York Yankees host the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees won 100 games last year and return one of the Yankees vs Orioles most formidable lineups in the league, led by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Before laying any Yankees vs. Orioles picks of your own.

The bullpen was the clear weakness on this team heading into the season and even if these last few games have had a different outcome, there was a legitimate case to be made that Theo Epstein’s front office should’ve added another quality reliever or two to this group, even if it wasn’t Kimbrel.

Angels vs Rangers

Angels vs Rangers : Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels meet Angels vs Rangers Thursday in MLB action at Angel Stadium. The Rangers have scored 11 runs in their last three games and four or more runs in five of their six MLB 2019 Volquez is 1-4 strikeouts in his career against the Angels. Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels meet Angels vs Rangers Thursday in MLB action at Angel Stadium.

The Texas Rangers look for another victory after winning four of their last five games. The Rangers have scored 11 runs in their last three games and four or more runs in five of their six games.

The Texas Rangers have won seven of their last 11 games when scoring more than one run. Elvis Andrus leads the Rangers with nine hits and three RBI while Nomar Mazara and Asdrubal Cabrera have combined for 12 hits and 14 RBI. Edinson Volquez gets the ball, and he is 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA and three strikeouts this season. Volquez is 1-4 with a 10.71 ERA and 11 strikeouts in his career against the Angels.

The Los Angeles Angels could use a win here to snap a four-game losing streak. The Angels have scored five runs in their last three games and three or less runs in five of their first six games.

The Los Angeles Angels have lost 11 of their last 15 games when scoring less than six runs. Jonathan Lucroy leads the Angels with six hits and one RBI while Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun have combined for 10 hits and five RBI. Matt Harvey gets the ball, and he is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA and one strikeout this season. This will be Harvey’s first career game against the Rangers.

The Rangers are 1-4 in their last 5 vs. American League West, 1-7 in Volquez’s last 8 road starts and 1-4 in Volquez’s last 5 starts. The Angels are 4-1 in their last 5 games following an off day, 1-5 in their last 6 Thursday games and 0-4 in their last 4 overall. The Rangers are 0-5 in the last 5 meetings in Los Angeles and 0-5 in the last 5 meetings. The under is 9-1-1 in Angels last 11 overall. The over is 2-0-2 in Volquez’s last 4 starts overall.

Volquez wasn’t great in his season debut and has just four innings under his belt in about a year and a half. Harvey continues to show flashes of being a reliable pitcher and will make the Angels very happy if he can continue to give them six solid innings. I’m not sold on the Rangers strong start to the season, and it’s only a matter of time before the Angels offense wakes up. Maybe the day off will help the Angels clear their heads and put together good at bats. I’ll give the Angels the edge at home for the reasonable price.

The LA Angels may have been playing awfully, mostly on the offensive side, but the pitching has come through in dividends. The pitching was the biggest concern coming into 2019 so the Angels are already in a somewhat better spot than last year. Seeing them perform so admirably only adds fuel to the ever-burning optimism with this new Angels squad.

Home Opener time! The season starts now, you can finally get excited for real! Those last 6 games just happened to be built up to the real start of the show, like a really bad prequel if you will.

It’s as if the Stars Wars prequels came out before the original trilogy, these last 6 games have only diminished the wonder and excitement surrounding previous beloved characters as well as adding universally hated new characters (I’m looking at you Jar-Jar). Most of the Angels free agent signings are looking like Jar-Jar additions to this squad; Zack Cozart, Justin Bour, Albert Pujols (as always), and Tommy Le Stella.

The Angels lead the major leagues in runs this spring. On Monday, for the 10th time in 20 Cactus League games, they scored at least eight runs. … Jack Kruger, perhaps the Angels’ top catching prospect, drove in six runs on a three-run homer and bases-loaded triple. Kruger, 24, a 20th-round pick from Mississippi State, is likely to start this season at double-A Mobile.

ON THE MOUND: Matt Harvey started for the Angels but did not survive the second inning. He faced 10 batters, gave up five hits and four runs, threw a wild pitch and committed an error. He also crossed up catcher Jonathan Lucroy on one pitch, he said. “I just couldn’t get it going for some reason. I wasn’t very good,” Harvey said. “Mid-spring training blues, so to speak,” manager Brad Ausmus said. … Closer Cody Allen faced seven batters, retired three and gave up a home run to Hunter Pence.

Infielder Zack Cozart said he was  confident he would be ready for opening day. Cozart, who has not played in a week because of a strained calf, resumed running Monday on a treadmill. …

Outfielder Justin Upton, who has not played this spring as the Angels protect a knee prone to tendinitis, started taking live batting practice Monday. … Ausmus said the return of pitcher Tyler Skaggs, scratched from his scheduled Sunday start because of forearm fatigue, is “borderline imminent.”

Cubs vs Braves Live : The Chicago Cubs will Cubs vs Braves turn to 2019 veteran ace Jon Lester in an effort to reverse their fortunes MLB when they visit the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night. Braves and Baseball the Cubs in action with Atlanta Braves vs Chicago Cubs tickets. Buy cheap Cubs vs Braves Atlanta Braves Chicago Cubs tickets from here.

Braves are seeking their second consecutive victory following a three-game losing streak to start the season. Atlanta starter Julio Teheran lost his first outing of the year, but picked up the win the last time he faced the Cubs.

The Braves are now -135 sportsbook favorites (risk $135 to win $100) after opening as slight underdogs, with the Cubs fetching +115 (risk $100 to win $115) in the latest Cubs vs. Braves odds. Before making your Cubs vs. Braves picks, listen to what the SportsLine projection model has to say.

The model, which simulates every game 10,000 times, has raked in the winnings for those following its picks and is off to a profitable start on its top-rated MLB money-line picks this season. The model has a proven track record of hitting on its top picks in baseball, football, basketball, hockey and more. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now, the model has zeroed in Cubs vs. Braves. We can tell you it is leaning over, and it also says one side of the money line has all the value. You can only see that pick at SportsLine.

The model knows the Cubs will be counting on Lester, the reliable staple of their rotation, to help them get back on the winning track after shaky pitching contributed to the recent losing streak. The 35-year-old lefty was efficient in his first start of the season, a 12-4 win over the Texas Rangers.

Lester (1-0, 3.00 ERA) allowed two earned runs on four hits in six innings. He struck out three, while allowing two walks and one homer. It was the first opening day win for Lester in the past five seasons. In nine career starts against the Braves, Lester is 6-2 with a 2.47 ERA.

But just because Lester has history on his side doesn’t guarantee Chicago is the best value on the Cubs vs. Braves money line.

On Wednesday, the Braves will have history on their side when Teheran faces Chicago. In fact, the Braves are 7-1 in his last eight starts against the Cubs and are also 7-1 in their last eight home games.

Teheran won his lone outing against Chicago last season despite allowing four runs in six innings. The 28-year-old righty has been particularly effective against Cubs slugger Kris Bryant, allowing just one hit in 11 at-bats while recording five strikeouts. Despite taking the loss in the opener, Teheran was relatively solid with three runs and four hits allowed in five innings against the Phillies.

Right-hander Kyle Hendricks will make his 2019 debut in Monday’s home opener in Atlanta. Hendricks was great for the Cubs in 2018 posting a 3.44 ERA while making 33 starts and logging 199 innings. He didn’t pitch against Atlanta in 2018 but has performed well in his career with a 2.33 ERA to go along with 18 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.

There was a point in the spring where it looked like Sean Newcomb might not make the club and would instead start at Triple-A. However, he pitched better In his final spring start against Cincinnati and given injuries to Mike Foltynewicz and Kevin Gausman have him in line to start the home opener.

There has never been a question about Newcomb’s stuff, it has always been about his command. He made strides at times in 2018 but his career to date has very much been a roller coaster ride.

Jon Lester made the Opening Day start for the Cubs in Texas and picked up a victory after allowing two runs over six innings to go along with three strikeouts and two walks. Lester has made nine career starts against Atlanta and has a 2.47 ERA during that span.

Thanks to Tuesday’s off day, the Braves will bring back Julio Teheran on regular rest to start Game 2 against the Cubs. Teheran pitched good enough against the Phillies on Opening Day with a fastball that was sitting 90-92 and a good slider. He ended up allowing four runs over five innings.

Yu Darvish struggled in his return to Texas in his first start logging a career-worst seven walks while lasting just 2 2/3 innings. Darvish did a good job of minimizing the damage allowing just three runs and two hits. Darvish has faced the Braves twice in his career allowing 12 hits and five runs in 8 2/3 innings. This will be his second career start at SunTrust Park.

Max Fried had been penciled in to start Thursday’s series finale but that won’t be happening after pitching in relief on Sunday in Philadelphia. It is possible that we see Kevin Gausman in this spot after he pitched in a minor league game earlier this week. The Braves could also elect to start Fried on short rest and piggy back him with someone like Bryse Wilson.

Reds vs Pirates Live : The Cincinnati Reds and the Reds vs Pirates Pittsburgh Pirates have a century old rivalry. If you want to catch these MLB two rivals in action,Although the regular Baseball 2019 season Reds vs Pirates technically began last week, when the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics played a pair of games in Tokyo rest of the league will enjoy Opening.

“In those moments when we’re struggling or we’re facing challenges or those moments of adversity, that’s when Tito is at his best.”Francona joined the Indians after a wildly successful run in Boston, where he helped the Red Sox end their 86-year World Series title drought in 2004.

He led them to another championship in 2007 before his stretch ended in 2011. Cleveland was a new beginning, and a familiar place, as his father played six seasons for the Indians.

“I will say this: I have no ambition to ever work somewhere else,” said Francona, who will turn 60 later this month. “There’s going to come a time when I can’t do this job the way I want to, because of age. That may happen some point, but I don’t have any ambition to ever go somewhere else and that’s because of the people here.”

If he stays around three more seasons, and there’s little reason to think he won’t, Francona will surpass Lou Boudreau for the longest managerial run with the Indians. Boudreau, who was also an All-Star shortstop, managed the Indians from 1942 to 1950. He led them to their last Series title in 1948.

The Indians are an AL-best 547-427 (.562) since 2013 under Francona. His 1,576 career wins with Philadelphia, Boston and Cleveland are second most among current major league managers, behind San Francisco’s Bruce Bochy.

Francona said a key to his success in Cleveland has been the strong relationships he built with Antonetti and general manager Mike Chernoff. Francona can be himself, and that in turn has made him a stronger communicator and manager.

“I know it’s made me a better person,” he said. “We collaborate so much. And there’ll be times at meetings and I’ll say something and when I leave the meaning, I’m like, ‘Why would I say that?’ And then about two days later, I’ll say, ‘Chris, I don’t know why.’ And he’ll be like, ‘Yeah, I knew you’d come around.'”

While the Indians are currently in a championship window, there may come a time when they have to rebuild. If that happens, Francona’s prepared to do his part.

That includes the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds, who will play each other to begin the season for just the third time in the last 60 years.

Here’s how you can watch and what you should be aware of heading into the new season. For the Pirates, one of the biggest stories of their season will be the further development of Jameson Taillon. Last season, he made 32 starts and posted a 3.20 ERA. If Taillon can take yet another step forward, the Pirates will have a budding ace on their hands. They’ll need one to avoid the cellar and realistically threaten for a wild-card position.

Reds: The Reds spent the winter adding rental veterans. You’ll find a lot of familiar faces here, including Yasiel Puig, Alex Wood, Matt Kemp, and Tanner Roark. Clearly the Reds are trying this season, the question is whether the effort will pay off. Cincy is stuck in arguably baseball’s deepest division, with each team having a realistic chance at breaking .500. Seeing as how the Reds haven’t enjoyed a winning season since 2013, it’s fair to say that the fanbase has reason to be excited.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Trevor Williams pitched six effective innings and drove in two runs, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the sloppy Cincinnati Reds 5-0 on Sunday.

Williams picked up where he left off last season, when he was the only major leaguer to make 10 starts of at least six innings without allowing a run. The right-hander gave up three hits, struck out six and walked one.

The Reds put runners on the corners with two out in the sixth, but Williams struck out Yasiel Puig to end the inning. Puig is 0 for 7 with four strikeouts and a walk in two games after he was acquired in an offseason trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Puig also misjudged Francisco Cervelli‘s fly ball to right in the ninth inning, but recovered in time to make a diving catch.

Adam Frazier and Melky Cabrera each had two hits as Pittsburgh earned its first win of the season after losing 5-3 on opening day on Thursday. Saturday’s game was postponed by rain.Sonny Gray (0-1) struggled in his Cincinnati debut, allowing three runs, two earned, and five hits in 2 2/3 innings. The right-hander walked four and struck out none.

Gray was acquired in an offseason trade with the New York Yankees, and then agreed to a new contract with Cincinnati.Pittsburgh jumped in front on Josh Bell‘s RBI single in the first. The run was unearned after Starling Marte reached when Gray dropped a relay to first for the first of four errors for the Reds.

Indians vs Blue Jays Live : Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians Indians vs Blue Jays Tickets (Magnet Schedule & Car Magnet Giveaway) Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays. Cleveland Indians-Toronto Blue Jays Tickets – American League Battles. The Toronto Blue Jays displayed signs of breaking out of their offensive . Cleveland Indians have shown Indians vs Blue Jays limited flashes of doing the same.

The Toronto Blue Jays and the Cleveland Indians will match up to kick off their MLB series on Thursday. The Jays will be going with RHP Aaron Sanchez in the start Thursday. In his first start of the year on March 30 versus Detroit, Sanchez logged a win with 5.0 innings, three hits, zero earned and six strikeouts.

Toronto managed a nice 5-3 victory against the Orioles on Wednesday (it was 5-0 heading into the ninth inning). The hero for the Jays in that one was Randal Grichuck with a pair of solo home runs, three runs and three hits.

Over on the Indians’ side, they’re sending out Trevor Bauer on Thursday. In Bauer’s first start this year on March 30, he turned in a great outing with 7.0 innings, one earned and nine strikeouts in a no-decision versus Minnesota.

The Indians dropped their Wednesday game versus the White Sox 8-3. Hanley Ramirez put up a two-run homer in that one, while Carlos Santana logged two hits, one run and one RBI.

The Jays are 3-7 in their last 10 in game one of a series and 1-4 in their last five Thursday games. Toronto is 5-1 in Sanchez’s last six starts and 0-4 in his last four Thursday starts.

Meanwhile, the Indians are 46-20 in the last 66 Thursday games and 7-0 in Bauer’s last seven Thursday starts. Cleveland is 7-2 in Bauer’s last nine starts and 9-3 in his last 12 home starts.

Sanchez looked great in his first action of the year, and that performance will at least temporarily rid us of the memory of his 13 earned over 9.1 innings in a three-start period last summer.

As for Bauer, he was used sparingly down the stretch last year, and for the most part did pretty well until his final appearance (four hits; two earned; 1.1 innings versus Houston on October 8).

Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI Wednesday against the Orioles.

Gurriel delivered the game-winning hit by doubling in two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Entering the game, he was 0-for-15 at the plate, so it was positive to see him record his first two hits of the season. With that behind him, he’ll look to keep building on this performance as the Blue Jays open a four-game set against the Indians.

The Indians signed the popular Francona to a two-year contract extension through the 2022 season on Wednesday, giving him more security and a chance to become the longest-tenured manager in Cleveland’s rich history.

Francona’s deal was set to expire after 2020, but as he begins his seventh season, the Indians decided to lengthen its successful partnership with the man known as “Tito” for at least two more years.

Since being hired in 2013, Francona has led the Indians to three consecutive American League Central titles and the World Series in 2016, when Cleveland lost Game 7 in 10 innings to the Chicago Cubs. The Indians, favored to win the division again in 2019, have made the postseason four times, had a winning record six times and have the AL’s best record under Francona.

“We had exceedingly high expectations when we hired Tito, and the unbelievable thing is, as high as those expectations were, he’s gone on to exceed those every day,” said Chris Antonetti, the team’s president of baseball operations. “And it’s not just with what happens on the field, it’s what happens behind the scenes.

“In those moments when we’re struggling or we’re facing challenges or those moments of adversity, that’s when Tito is at his best.”

Francona joined the Indians after a wildly successful run in Boston, where he helped the Red Sox end their 86-year World Series title drought in 2004. He led them to another championship in 2007 before his stretch ended in 2011.

Nationals vs Mets Live : National League East rivals with their eyes on a division crown help get the Thursday MLB schedule underway. It’s a 1:10 p.m. ET first pitch between the Washington Nationals and New York Mets at Citi Field. Before locking in any Nationals vs Mets picks of your own on Thursday.

There are *multiple* days of snow possible in Chicago’s 10-day forecast. The Cubs still cannot really throw strikes and haven’t won since Opening Day. Eloy’s hitting .133 with six strikeouts in 17 plate apperances. This is *not* what we were promised.

This brings us to our powerful rankings. These Power Rankings were not kind to Chicago teams this week, as the White Sox dropped a few spots but the Cubs took a TUMBLE. I’m sorry, fans, I cannot help you. The rankings are so powerful that they have a mind of their own.

Want to see just how far the Cubs fell? Want to see how your non-Chicago team fared? Want to just peruse to feel consuming anger? Stop kidding yourselves — Craig Kimbrel wouldn’t magically solve all of the Cubs’ bullpen issues.

Even if the elite closer (who is still a free agent, by the way) walked through the door of the Cubs locker room tomorrow, that doesn’t suddenly make this one of the best bullpens in the game. And it sure doesn’t change anything in the standings — the Cubs can’t retroactively add three more wins to their record.

Five games into 2019, the Cubs don’t have a closer problem. They have a problem getting the ball to the closer.

On Saturday in Texas, the Cubs gave up the lead in the 8th inning when Carl Edwards Jr. served up a 3-run homer to Joey Gallo. On Sunday, it was Tyler Chatwood and Mike Montgomery giving up 4 runs in the 7th inning and then Pedro Strop throwing a wild pitch in the 9th to give the Rangers a walk-off win.

Then Wednesday, it was Steve Cishek who walked the first three hitters in the 8th inning before Randy Rosario was tagged for a 3-run double.

Kimbrel would not have stopped any of those three bullpen meltdowns and the only part he may have been able to help was Sunday’s game in that he likely would’ve pitched the 9th inning of a 10-10 tie instead of Strop.

But these guys — Edwards, Strop, Cishek — are supposed to be the guys. Even if Kimbrel was around or Brandon Morrow was back from injury, that wouldn’t immediately have a positive trickle-down effect on the rest of the bullpen.

Nobody predicted Cishek would walk 3 batters in a row. Edwards has faded down the stretch the last couple years, but he has been lights-out at the start of each season and was coming off a fantastic spring. Strop has been the Cubs’ most consistent member of the bullpen for more than a half-decade and is one of the more underrated relievers in all of baseball.

This is a system-wide failure in the bullpen right now. The Cubs’ problems go well beyond the closer. Kimbrel isn’t signing on and throwing 3 innings every night.

Sure, if the Cubs had Kimbrel, Joe Maddon could’ve called Strop’s number for the 8th inning, maybe things don’t get out of hand and the Cubs improve their record to 2-3. But Cishek is one of the most trusted relievers and for good reason — he had a 2.18 ERA and 1.04 WHIP last year even including late-season struggles. And he had been dominant (4 Ks, only 1 hit allowed in 1.2 innings prior to Wednesday).

Kimbrel or no Kimbrel, that doesn’t change the fact that even reliable relievers are failing to come through for the Cubs right now. It doesn’t matter what name Maddon calls and it wouldn’t matter who he has back there waiting for the 9th inning. The Cubs haven’t even gotten to the 9th with a lead since Opening Day.

Panthers vs Rangers

Panthers vs Rangers Live : Tonight the New York Rangers look to get back to winning hockey against the Florida Panthers at Madison Square Garden. New NHL New York Rangers Car Truck Front Rear Heavy duty All Weather Floor Mats. Jonathan Huberdeau was able to bring the Panthers back within a goal, but Kevin Hayes iced the game in the third round with a disgusting move to his forehand and gave the Rangers a 5-4 win.

In their second to last home game of the regular season, the Bruins welcomed the Florida Panthers for a Saturday matinee at TD Garden. It certainly felt like a matinee, as the sluggish Bruins never found their groove and lost, 4-1. Riley Sheahan and Evgenii Dadonov took advantage of a few defensive lapses and put the Panthers ahead by two after 20 minutes.

Noel Acciari cut the deficit to one after hammering home a rebound in the second period. But the Bruins couldn’t build on that momentum. Instead, on a power play late in the middle frame, they conceded a shorthanded tally from Troy Brouwer to give the Panthers the 3-1 lead. “We battled back from 2-0 [to make it] 2-1. [But] you could tell we didn’t have our A-game,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said following the loss. “Our execution was off…but this was a team loss, a total team loss today, in my estimation. We just were not crisp with the puck. Another day, if we had a little more puck luck, we might squeeze a point or two or get a win, but we certainly wouldn’t walk away and say ‘boy, this was one of our better ones’, no matter how this turned out today.”

Here’s what we learned as the Bruins had their 12-game home winning streak snapped at the hands of their Atlantic Division foes.

Johansson’s first line experiment didn’t work
In typical Cassidy fashion, the third-year Bruins coach shook things up during Friday’s practice, giving Marcus Johansson a shot on the first line with Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. David Pastrnak, fresh off his five-point outing against the Rangers, skated alongside Jake DeBrusk and David Krejci on the second line.

It was an effort to balance all four lines, especially with Pastrnak tallying four of his five points with DeBrusk and Krejci on Wednesday. It should’ve worked in theory, but Johansson is still trying to find his footing after his second game back from a lung contusion. Cassidy’s plan didn’t work at all. The Bruins looked a bit lost at times. Johansson just didn’t seem to mesh as well with Bergeron and Marchand as he did with Krejci and DeBrusk before his latest injury. The former Caps and Devils forward finished with a minus-one rating and failed to record a single shot on net in his 13:38 of ice time.

“Listen, I have to find a place for him, but by the same token we’re here to win games and until we get locked in,” Cassidy said about his lineup. “I think I’ve coached that way since I got here. But no matter what, Marcus missed time. He’s not going to have a ton of time to find a line. So one or two games, yes, could help him, but I have to do what’s right by our group as well.”
